Light Up the Night Masquerade Ball 2016

January 12, 2016

Lethbridge, AB: Brighter Spirits for Refugees Ahead.

Imagine moving across the world to try to keep your family safe and give them a better life.  As a refugee, you hope that your new home will be welcoming to you and your family.  This is happening in Lethbridge due to an exciting new partnership between Lethbridge Family Services and one of the Rotary Clubs in Lethbridge.   The Urban Spirits Rotary Club in Lethbridge is rolling out the welcome mat to newcomers to Lethbridge in a very enlightening way by choosing the Immigrant Services Youth Empowerment Program offered by Lethbridge Family Services as the recipient of their annual fundraising event.
The Urban Spirits club is once again hosting their signature annual fundraising Masquerade Ball. Each year, the event theme is inspired by the location of the Rotary International Convention. The 2016 theme for the Ball is Light Up the Night: A Korean Lantern Festival, reflecting this year’s host country, Korea.  Each year the Masquerade Ball brings in hundreds of people for masquerade themed festivities.
“The Rotary Club of Lethbridge Urban Spirits chose Lethbridge Family Services as their charity of choice this year because as a young service group, we recognize the need to be leaders in acceptance and inclusion around new Canadians and immigrants. The program that LFS provides to empower immigrant youth is exactly what our club stands for and believes in. We as a club have always had a focus on youth and the program fits well into the areas of rotary focus internationally. We are so thrilled to support, and be supported by an amazing organization within our community to make a difference for citizens who need it the most!”-Sharon Rempel, Event Chair
Light Up the Night promises to be a night of culture, excitement, fun and feel good giving back to our community. The evening includes a Korean inspired meal and signature drink as well as professional break dancers from a studio out of Edmonton. There will be numerous unique opportunities to engage in fundraising throughout the night to help immigrant youth get a jump start on their new life.  Tickets are on sale now at all three LFS locations, Eventbrite, and through Urban Spirit Rotary Club members.
As an agency, we are so grateful for partnerships like this.  It takes a community to help settle newcomers successfully as there is so much to teach these newcomers about their new home.  We are honored to be the recipient for this year’s Masquerade Ball funds.  The funds will be utilized to help improve the kid’s literacy in English and knowledge of Canadian culture.”- Melody Garner, Director Advancement & Community Relations at LFS.
